How to Reset the Toner on Brother HL-L2300D (Fix the Flashing Light)

The Scenario: You have just installed a brand new toner cartridge into your Brother HL-L2300D printer. You close the lid, waiting for the green light… but the “Replace Toner” light is still flashing.
It refuses to print.
The Good News: Your printer is not broken, and the toner is probably fine. Brother printers rely on a digital “page counter” that sometimes fails to reset automatically when you swap a cartridge.
You just need to manually force the reset. Here is how to do it in less than 60 seconds.
The Reset Instructions
- Turn the printer OFF.
- Open the Front Cover (leave the toner inside).
- Hold down the “Go” button and turn the printer ON.
- Keep holding the “Go” button until the Toner, Drum, and Paper lights are all lit up.
- Release the “Go” button.
- Press the “Go” button 2 times. (The lights will change).
- Pause for a second.
- Press the “Go” button 5 times.
- The Paper Light should now be flashing.
- Close the front cover.
Did it work?
The “Ready” light should now be green. The printer now thinks it has a fresh toner installed and will let you print until the powder actually runs out.
Why Does This Happen?
Original Brother cartridges have a small mechanical gear that spins to tell the printer “I am new.” Sometimes this gear sticks, or—if you are using compatible cartridges—the gear might not be positioned perfectly for the sensor.
The manual reset above bypasses the mechanical gear entirely and resets the software counter.
